D'après la série

Dans les années '80, après le déchaînement de la Queen of Fables sur Gotham City, Zatanna s'est chargée de la transformer en un livre du Code des Impôts.

Une trentaine d'années plus tard, elle la libère de sa transformation sur ordre du juge, afin que la criminelle puisse servir sa sentence en tant qu'humaine à l'Asile d'Arkham, sans se douter des conséquences d'une telle action.

Quand Harley Quinn et Joker retrouvent le livre dans lequel a été enfermée Ligue des Justiciers, elle parvient à libérer Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash et Green Lantern.

Analyse

Malgré ses très courtes apparitions, sans la moindre ligne de dialogue, Zatanna est un élément central quant au destin de la Ligue des Justiciers et de la ville de Gotham City.

En effet, c'est elle qui transforme puis libère Queen of Fables du livre du Code des Impôts – une punition jugée extrême et sexiste, puisque d'autres criminels masculins coupable de bien pires méfaits n'ont jamais été châtiés aussi sévèrement - ce qui conduit la criminelle à nourrir une haine sans limites vis-à-vis de la Ligue. La sorcière va exacter sa vengeance en appliquant une sentence similaire à Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash et Green Lantern, les enfermant dans son livre de contes, qui sera perdu parmi les décombres de la tour de Joker.

D'une certaine façon, Zatanna est indirectement responsable du sort de ses pairs et de Gotham City qui, sans ses héros, tombe proie aux malfaiteurs de la pire espèce, transformant la ville et sa population, et la coupant des États-Unis. Il n'est pas indiqué si la magicienne a tenté de résoudre ces problèmes avant l'intervention de Harley Quinn et Joker.

Sa dernière action lui permet de rectifier la situation, libérant ses collègues et permettant à Gotham de retrouver sa sérénité d'antan, c'est donc elle qui ferme le chapitre sur l'histoire entre Ligue des Justiciers et Queen of Fables.

Contrairement à ses autres itérations, Zatanna ne semble pas avoir besoin de mots pour lancer ses sorts.

Le personnage a probablement été choisi car elle apparaît dans des séries telles que Gotham Girls ou Birds of Prey.

Notes sur le design

Le personnage ne diffère pas tellement de ses autres itérations. Avec son haut-de-forme - typique d'un magicien en sortant un lapin -, chemise à corset blanche, nœud papillon violet, veste et collants sombres, elle incarne bien l'illusionniste de spectacle.
